Landlady’s Birthday Festival Beer List

Here are the guest beers for the festival starting Friday 28th at 12pm!

Brown Cow – Mrs Simpson’s Thriller in Vanilla (5.1%) – A multi-award winning scrumptious rich porter brewed with fresh vanilla pods complimenting the complex dark malts. A Thriller in Vanilla that packs a punch !

Empire – Strikes Back (4%) – A pale golden bitter with a hoppy aroma and good hop and malt balance, with a fruity citrus flavour. Very light on the palate and a good session beer.

Little Valley – Stoodley Stout (4.8%) – a rich, dark stout containing chocolate and crystal malt mixed with oats and wheat. It has a rich and creamy roasted flavour with notes of orange and citrus.

Nook – best (4.2%) – A well balanced, smooth, easy drinking Best Bitter. Offering floral aromas balanced by a smooth, malty palate.

Old Dairy – Gold Top (4.3%) – Combining Maris Otter, the best British ale malt, with malts normally used in the finest continental lagers gives a beer with good body, caramelised undertones and a distinct gold colour.

Abbeydale – Deception (4.1%) – A pale beer, made with fabulous Nelson Sauvin hops. Aromas of elderflower and grapes. Strong citrus flavours, especially grapefruit. Long lasting bitter finish. Very refreshing and packed full of flavour.

Bridestones – Dark Mild (4.5%) – An award winning beer, made with 4 English malts: Maris Otter, Chocolate, Crystal and Roasted Barley and hopped with East Kent Goldings. A creamy velvety mild with strong malt characters and an overall sweetness.

Daleside – Daleside Bitter (3.7%) – A medium brown, easy drinking session beer. A traditional mix of malts and hops gives a well-balanced Yorkshire Bitter flavour with a hint of sweetness at the finish.

Elland – Nettle Thrasher (4.4%) – This is a copper coloured traditional strong ale, brewed using six different malts and robust flavours from the combined use of English hop varieties. All this goes together to make this a mighty mouthful!

Bradfield – Farmers Stout (4.5%) – A dark enriched ‘black and white’ stout balanced by ploughing through roasted malts and flaked oats with a subtle bitter hop charcater.

Partners – Pure Gold (3.5%) – An easy drinking session beer combining four different malts, that give this beer a complex character. It is finished using target and fuggles hops.

Rudgate – IPA (4.4%) – Initially bittersweet, well-balanced complex fruit. Hints of citrus and a bitter, hoppy finish.

The Price Isn’t Right

TODAY I received a letter from Punch Taverns informing me that Ossett Yorkshire Blonde is now available permanently from Tingley depot. However, the letter didn’t mention the price so I rang Ossett Brewery to enquire. Our biggest selling beer is Saltaire Blonde so, as blonde beers are very popular here, I was excited at the prospect of selling another Yorkshire brewed ale alongside the Saltaire. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that the Yorkshire Blonde, a 3.9% ABV beer, costs around £13 +VAT a cask more than the Saltaire Blonde (4% ABV). How can I explain to customers that a 3.9% strength beer retails at more than a 4% one? Consequently I can’t justify stocking the Ossett beer, even though I’d like to. A huge own goal from both Ossett and Punch in my opinion.
